Frequently asked questions

1. Purpose of Marine Corps JROTC:
JROTC is a U. S. Marine Corps sponsored character and leadership development course focused on developing self-confidence, discipline, citizenship, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility within the individual Cadet.

2. What JROTC is not:
The course is not a military recruitment program.  Cadets who attend have no obligation to enter military service. Neither is it a "boot camp" to send uncontrollable, disrespectful, or apathetic youth.  The student must elect to participate in this program.

3. What is required of Cadets?
The most important requirement for Cadets is a positive attitude.  You will be exposed to new experiences and stresses which will be exciting.  They will also test and develop your character by design.  No steel is tempered without heat and pressure.  You will likely fail at least once in the program and this is expected.  Through your failures you will become stronger and wiser as long as you accept responsibility and learn from your mistakes.
All Cadets will be required to adhere to Marine Corps grooming and dress standards both in and out of uniform.  These standards will be clearly outlined during the first two weeks of instruction.  For male Cadets, these standards include maintaining a regulation haircut, shaving, not wearing earrings at ANY time, and dressing according to approved USMC JROTC guidelines.  For female Cadets, these standards include maintaining a regulation hair length and style, wearing the approved quantity and type of earrings and makeup, and dressing according to approved USMC JROTC guidelines.  Both male and female Cadets will be required to follow USMC guidelines regarding tattoos.  Body piercings are prohibited for all Cadets.

4. Who is eligible to participate?
Any boy or girl in grades 9 through 12 who is enrolled in the Hays Consolidated Independent School District and attending Jack C. Hays High School.  Program candidates must be able and willing to participate in all activities.  Students with documented physical limitations who wish to join the program should have parents contact the Marine Corps JROTC office to discuss options.

5. What is the cost to attend?
There is no cost to enroll in the program.  Cadets will be issued uniforms which they must properly maintain and return at the end of the academic year or upon disenrollment from the program.  Articles which are lost or damaged beyond normal wear and tear must be replaced at the Cadet's expense.

6. What are the benefits of participating?
The greatest benefits of participating in Marine Corps JROTC are demonstrated by former Cadets.  It is typical of adults who were Cadets to attribute increased confidence, discipline, and leadership ability to the time they spent in Marine Corps JROTC.
This is an elective class which meets the graduation requirement for physical education.  Cadets are also provided an opportunity to assist in their community through Program sponsored "civic service" activities. JROTC provides regular feedback on how well the Cadet is doing in the form of promotions and military type awards. Additionally, many students indicate that the friendships they make as a Cadet are some of the closest and most steadfast associations they have while in high school.

7. What are the Classes and Activities:
Marine Corps Junior ROTC instructs a variety of classes and activities which are not normally available to high school students.  They include:
            -Military Drill
            -Marksmanship
            -Physical Training
            -Military Customs and Courtesies
            -Military History
            -Citizenship
            -Leadership
            -Uniform Wear and Maintenance
            -First Aid
            -Grooming Standards
-Public Speaking (does not satisfy the graduation required Applied Communication class but provides insight and practical experience for the successful speaker)

8. What Extracurricular Activities are available:
Cadets who wish to participate in extracurricular activities have the following options from which to choose:
-Competition Drill Teams (armed and unarmed)
-Color Guards (opportunities to both compete or merely perform exhibitions at regular school functions are available)
-PT Team (similar to "track and field" – teams compete in physical fitness events)
-Competition Rifle Marksmanship Teams (Olympic style shooting)
-Academics (oral presentation and current events questions)

Cadets who compete on any of these teams earn individual awards and become eligible for letter jackets.
